The Aerospace Education officer of the 83rd Composite Squadron is Maj. Pat Schmidt. Maj. Schmidt in her role reports directly to the Squadron Commander. In this role, Maj. Schmidt is responsible for the below.
Duties of the Aerospace Education Officer
Maj. Schmidt is responsible for Overseeing the aerospace education portion of the cadet and senior member programs, ensuring cadet orientation flights are taking place, reporting on weekly current events, working with the unit activities officer to plan enrichment activities. The AE officer is also responsible for filing reports as required by regulation; briefing unit commanders regularly, supporting wing/region/national activities, and supporting the AE outreach programs in the community. These duties including teaching and reporting on Aerospace Education related current events both within the squadron, and going outside the squadron to teach and educate within the community as a whole. Aerospace Education Officers are also primarily responsible for ensuring that Aerospace Education Members who are primarily classroom teachers are receiving the support that they need. Aerospace Education is one of the three chartered missions of the Civil Air Patrol.
Aerospace Education Officer Advancement Requirements
As with all specialty tracks within Civil Air Patrol, the person in this role must meet certain requirements and fulfill certain criteria in order to advance through technician, senior, and master levels with each level progressively adding additional duties and responsibilities. All of the different duties and responsibilities as well as additional information regarding this position are therefore available in CAP Pamphlet 215 (Aerospace Education Officer Specialty Track Study Guide). A member having completed their Yeager Award, as well as having attained the master level rating in the Aerospace Education Officer Specialty Track is awarded the A. Scott Crossfield award as well as a ribbon to wear on their uniform.
